FOLPMI
The Foundation
of Our Lady of Peace Mission, Inc. (FOLPMI) started as
a medical mission in 1984 under the leadership of Sister Eva Fidela
Maamo, SPC, MD, supported by dedicated and committed volunteer
medical professionals and civic groups. A member of the community
of St. Paul of Charities, Sister Eva is a medical surgeon who
learned firsthand about the debilitating impact of poverty and
diseases on the poor while serving the minority groups of South
Cotabato.
Evolving from a medical mission group,
the Foundation expanded its services to assist the poor "squatter"
communities in Sinalong, Malate, Paco, Navotas, Quezon City and
the Aetas in Zambales. In 1992, Sister Eva was named the Mother
Theresa of the Philippines. In 1997, she was honored with one
of Asia's most prestigious awards, the Ramon Magsaysay Award for
Community Leadership.
In 1996, the FOLPMI celebrated its
10th year anniversary by performing record levels of services,
all for free. These services included: 26 surgical missions, 38
medical missions, and 11 dental missions which led to 40,700 consultations,
2,026 major surgical operations, and 1,603 minor surgical operations.
Today the FOLPMI -- a non-stock,
non-profit, non-political organization -- is one of the largest
and most respected non-government institutions serving the poorest
of the poor in the Philippines through varied but integrated programs
geared towards the total development of the individual, families
and communities.
