Our History
In
1991, a small group of Filipino-Americans informally organized
to support medical missions in the Philippines. Two of the original
volunteers, Maricel Bretault and Celia Coronado, spearheaded the
organization of the Philippine Medical Mission (PMM). With the
support and encouragement of Reverend Father Gerry Creedon and
the Social Justice Ministry of St. Charles Church, PMM was born
on August 15, 1999. To date PMM has 10 members in its core committee
and 30 active support members.
From the beginning, PMM has worked
towards realizing its vision and mission by supporting the health
and medical service projects of the Foundation
of Our Lady of Peace Mission, Inc. (FOLPMI). These projects
include medical, surgical and dental missions in remote villages,
feeding centers for malnourished children in Manila, immunizations,
primary care centers, and a recently built hospital for the poor.
This year, PMM has adopted another
partner two new partners, The Religious of Notre Dame of the Missions
(RNDM) and Childhope Asia Philippines (CHAP).
- The Religious
of Notre Dame of the Missions provides basic health services
in the remote village of Kulaman in the Cotabato province. In
Kulaman, RNDM has built wells, trained mobile health workers,
provided scholarships in nursing for high school graduates,
brought medical missions to the community, provided community
health education, and provided immunization.
- Childhope
Asia Philippines Childhope Asia Philippines is an outreach
and protection/education on the streets program to advocate
the rights of street children. It provides various services
to streetchildren with the vision of helping them become responsible
and productive members of society. It is in the provision of
health services to streetchildren that PMM has focused its partnership
with CHAP.
