Medical
Missions
The FOLPMI undertakes medical-surgical-dental
missions in the most remote and poverty-stricken areas of the
country, providing free clinics, food, and nutrition education
activities. The program attracts successful, highly paid doctors
and nurses into volunteering their services, which requires them
to travel to depressed communities and perform nonstop consultation
and surgery in makeshift facilities for indigent patients.
A typical medical mission includes
about 23 surgeons, 2 dentists, 5 anesthesiologiest, and six nurses.
The team conducts marathon consultations and surgeries, with little
time off for rest and sleep. For many of the patients, the medical
missions provide a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be cured.
Without the missions, these individuals would have to live their
lives suffering from their illnesses.
The majority of the funds raised
by St. Charles Borromeo Philippine Medical Mission have funded
medical missions sponsored by FOLPMI.
